What Team Members May Do

  • Support residents with daily routines, life skills, personal hygiene, and healthy habits
  • Provide medication support only when trained, authorized, and assigned
  • Use respectful communication, positive behavioral support, and approved de-escalation practices
  • Facilitate recreation, social connection, and community participation
  • Coordinate or provide authorized transportation and appointment support
  • Protect resident rights, privacy, safety, personal belongings, and confidential information
  • Document services, observations, incidents, and follow-up actions accurately and promptly
  • Participate in emergency preparedness, team communication, supervision, and quality-improvement activities

Training and Professional Growth

New team members complete orientation to Brightfuture Haven's mission, policies, client rights,

confidentiality expectations, safety and emergency procedures, cultural competency, and role

responsibilities. Role-specific instruction, hands-on practice, and shadowing help employees build confidence before assuming full duties.


Learning continues throughout employment through annual refresher training, team-based learning, performance coaching, workshops, webinars, certification opportunities, and additional training based on job responsibilities or identified needs. Paraprofessional staff receive an individualized supervision plan, regular check-ins, feedback, and ongoing support from an assigned supervisor or qualified professional.

Residential Schedule Expectations

Brightfuture Haven operates 24 hours a day. Depending on the position, schedules may include daytime, evening, awake overnight, weekend, or holiday coverage. Each job posting will identify the specific schedule and attendance expectations.

Residential Support Specialist (Full-Time, Day Shift)

The Residential Support Specialist provides compassionate, person-centered support to adults with mental health and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities in a community-based residential setting. Responsibilities include assisting residents with activities of daily living, implementing individualized service and behavioral-support plans, supporting authorized medication and wellness routines, promoting community involvement, maintaining accurate documentation and helping ensure a safe, respectful home environment.


Minimum Qualifications and Regulatory Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old and able to read, write, understand and follow oral and written directions, as required by North Carolina regulations.
  • Possess a high school diploma or recognized equivalent, as required by Brightfuture Haven. Relevant human-services education or training is preferred.
  • Have at least one year of paid or volunteer experience supporting adults with mental health, I/DD, autism, brain injury, substance-use recovery or similar needs. Entry-level candidates who demonstrate suitability and complete all required training may be considered.
  • Consent to all required state and national criminal-history record checks, including fingerprinting when required by North Carolina law.
  • Successfully complete applicable North Carolina Health Care Personnel Registry, sex-offender registry, federal healthcare-exclusion and other required screenings. Applicants must not have a disqualifying substantiated finding of abuse, neglect, exploitation or misappropriation on an applicable registry.
  • Provide documentation establishing identity and authorization to work in the United States, as required by federal law.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and meet company insurability requirements when transporting residents or operating a company vehicle is an assigned responsibility.
  • Obtain and maintain required CPR, first aid, seizure-response and choking or airway-obstruction certifications within Brightfuture Haven’s established timeframe.
  • Complete required training in resident rights, confidentiality, person-centered care, mental health and I/DD support, crisis prevention, infection control, bloodborne pathogens, incident reporting and medication administration when assigned.
  • Demonstrate the competencies required for the population served and work under the supervision of an Associate Professional or Qualified Professional, as required by North Carolina regulations.
  • Be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.


Physical and Environmental Requirements

The Residential Support Specialist must be able to:

  • Frequently stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, reach and move throughout a residential home and community settings.
  • Occasionally lift or carry household supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Assist ambulatory residents with balance, mobility and emergency evacuation using approved techniques. Team or mechanical assistance must be used for tasks exceeding the employee’s safe individual capacity.
  • Use hands to assist with personal care, meal preparation, housekeeping, documentation, medication packaging and routine household equipment.
  • Perceive and respond promptly to resident communications, behavioral or medical changes, alarms, traffic and other potential hazards, with assistive devices or reasonable accommodation when effective.
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle and assist residents entering or exiting a vehicle when transportation is assigned.
  • Work in residential and community environments that may involve household noise, cleaning products, food allergens, outdoor weather and potential exposure to blood, body fluids, communicable illnesses or behavioral crises.
  • Remain alert and able to respond throughout the assigned shift, including awake-overnight shifts when scheduled.


Full-time, part-time and PRN opportunities may include daytime, evening, weekend, holiday and awake-overnight shifts. The anticipated pay range is $16–$18 per hour, based on qualifications, experience and assigned shift.
